Background of the study
Globalization has ushered in international language policy trends that increasingly influence local linguistic practices. In Lagos, the Yoruba language—an essential element of cultural identity—is now subject to these global trends. International language policies emphasize bilingualism, digital innovation, and inclusive educational frameworks, all of which have begun to shape Yoruba language planning (Afolabi, 2023). The integration of global methodologies with local initiatives in Lagos has led to reforms in curriculum design, teacher training, and media practices. These developments offer both opportunities and challenges; while international trends can introduce effective strategies for language modernization, they also risk diluting traditional cultural elements (Adebola, 2024). This study examines how international policy trends are adapted to local contexts, evaluating their impact on Yoruba language preservation and development. By analyzing policy documents, case studies from international contexts, and local adaptations in Lagos, the research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the dynamic interplay between global influences and indigenous language practices (Afolabi, 2023; Adebola, 2024).

Statement of the problem
Although international language policy trends offer innovative approaches to language planning, their application in the context of the Yoruba language in Lagos faces significant challenges. The hybridization of global frameworks with local linguistic traditions often results in inconsistent standards and diluted cultural authenticity (Afolabi, 2023). Disparities in policy implementation and resistance from traditional language advocates complicate efforts to maintain the integrity of Yoruba language practices (Adebola, 2024). This study seeks to identify the obstacles that arise when international trends are applied to local language planning and to assess their impact on the quality and cultural relevance of Yoruba language education and media in Lagos (Afolabi, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To examine the influence of international language policy trends on Yoruba language practices.
  2. To assess the impact of these trends on local language planning in Lagos.
  3. To propose strategies for harmonizing international trends with indigenous language preservation.

Research questions:

  1. How do international language policy trends influence Yoruba language planning in Lagos?
  2. What challenges arise from integrating global trends with local practices?
  3. What strategies can harmonize international influences with Yoruba language preservation?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it explores the impact of international language policy trends on the Yoruba language in Lagos, providing valuable insights for policymakers and educators. The findings will help identify effective strategies for balancing global influences with local cultural preservation, thereby enhancing the quality and relevance of Yoruba language education and media (Afolabi, 2023; Adebola, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to the influence of international language policy trends on Yoruba language practices in Lagos. It focuses solely on the impact of global frameworks and does not address language issues in other regions.

Definitions of terms:

  • International language policy trends: Global approaches and methodologies for language planning and education.
  • Yoruba language: The indigenous language of the Yoruba people, central to cultural identity.
  • Language planning: The process of developing and implementing policies to promote and preserve language use.
